Zimbabwe Ramps Up BRICS Membership Push
In comments to media, Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, revealed that Harare has contacted BRICS member nations to advocate for expedited acceptance into the economic bloc.
"Zimbabwe is ready to integrate more deeply into the global community, and joining blocs such as BRICS is very important for us in expanding our economic involvement and integrating Zimbabwe into the global economy," Murwira stated, as quoted by the outlet.
Murwira disclosed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has assigned him to spearhead Zimbabwe's diplomatic outreach to BRICS member states. Additionally, Zimbabwe submitted an application last year seeking membership in the New Development Bank (NDB), the bloc's financial institution, the report indicated.
The minister had previously addressed this matter in March, when he announced Zimbabwe's ambition to enter BRICS and verified that the nation was proceeding through the application process. The Zimbabwean president also conveyed Harare's membership aspirations to Russian President Vladimir Putin during bilateral discussions in St. Petersburg in June 2024.
Zimbabwe filed its formal membership application to join BRICS on March 7.
Last October, Russia's ambassador to Harare, Nikolay Krasilnikov, declared that Moscow "strongly supports Zimbabwe's keen interest in engaging with BRICS" and stands ready to facilitate the African nation's membership pursuit. He noted that "decisions in BRICS are made by consensus" but confirmed Russia welcomes Zimbabwe's integration into the group.
BRICS originated in 2006 with founding members Brazil, Russia, India, and China, before South Africa joined the alliance in 2010. The bloc has substantially enlarged its membership roster in recent years. Current full members now encompass Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, elevating the total to ten nations.
The organization established a partner country designation in 2024 to broaden engagement opportunities. Partner nations comprise Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam, enabling their participation in selected BRICS conferences and programs.
